The Super Bowl XLVII halftime show was a huge musical event that happened on February 3, 2013. It took place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. This show was a big part of Super Bowl XLVII, the championship game for American football.

The famous singer Beyoncé was the main performer. She also brought out special guests, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. They are both from her former group, Destiny's Child. Many people loved the show. It became one of the most watched Super Bowl halftime shows ever, with over 110 million viewers!

The show was put together by Ricky Kirshner and directed by Hamish Hamilton. Frank Gatson Jr. created the dances. Critics said that Beyoncé showed off her amazing live performance skills. The show was so exciting that it caused more than 299,000 tweets per minute on Twitter. This made it the most-tweeted moment in Twitter's history at that time. It was also the first time Pepsi sponsored the halftime show since Prince performed in Super Bowl XLI.

Getting Ready for the Show

In October 2012, it was announced that Beyoncé would be the main performer for the Super Bowl XLVII halftime show. Beyoncé shared the news on her website. She posted a picture of her face with the game's date written on her eye black (the dark grease athletes wear under their eyes).

Some early reports suggested that Beyoncé's husband, Jay-Z, might join her on stage. However, he did not appear during the show. A source later said that he wanted the performance to be "her moment." He didn't want to take any attention away from her.

Behind the Scenes

Ricky Kirshner produced the halftime show. Hamish Hamilton was the director. Beyoncé wore a large black jacket over a bodysuit made of lace and leather. She also had on thigh-high stockings. Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams wore similar black leather outfits.

The stage had two large logos of Beyoncé's face facing each other. The show began with Beyoncé rising from the floor between these logos. Flames also appeared on the stage. Throughout her performance, Beyoncé was joined by her all-female band and backup dancers. The Saintsations, a group of 32 cheerleaders from the New Orleans Saints team, also performed. A group of female musicians played horns.

Singing Live

A few weeks before the Super Bowl, Beyoncé sang the American national anthem at President Obama's second inauguration. Some people thought she was lip-syncing (singing along to a pre-recorded track).

During a press conference about her Super Bowl performance, Beyoncé explained what happened. She admitted that she did sing along with a pre-recorded track at the inauguration. However, she promised to sing live during the Super Bowl halftime show. She said, "I will absolutely be singing live... This is what I was born to do."

After her Super Bowl performance, many critics praised her. They said she proved she could sing live and silenced anyone who doubted her. One reviewer noted that her microphone made a clear "thump" sound. This showed that her microphone was on and she was singing live.

What Happened During the Show

The show started with a countdown. Then, an instrumental part of "Run the World (Girls)" played. Beyoncé rose onto the stage as a speech by Vince Lombardi was heard. Lombardi was a famous football coach. He talked about how important it is to try your best:

"Excellence must be pursued, it must be wooed with all of one's might and every bit of effort that we have; each day there's a new encounter, each week is a new challenge. All of the noise and all of the glamour, all of the color all of the excitement, all of the rings and all of the money. These are the things that linger only in the memory. But the spirit, the will to excel, the will to win, these are the things that endure."

Beyoncé then sang an a cappella (without instruments) part of "Love on Top". This led into a powerful performance of "Crazy in Love". She then performed "End of Time" with a stomping dance. Next was "Baby Boy". During this song, Beyoncé danced while screens behind her showed copies of herself doing the same moves.

Later, her former Destiny's Child bandmates, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, joined her. They rose from the floor onto the stage. Together, they sang "Bootylicious" and "Independent Women Part I". This last song was from the Charlie's Angels movie soundtrack. They ended these songs with a pose like the characters from the movie.

They continued with a version of Beyoncé's song "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)". After Kelly and Michelle left the stage, Beyoncé told the crowd, "Everybody put your hands toward me – I want to feel your energy!" She finished the show with a very emotional performance of "Halo". After her last song, Beyoncé thanked the crowd, saying, "Thank you for this moment. God bless y'all."
