The Super Bowl XLIX halftime show was a huge performance during the Super Bowl XLIX football game. It happened on February 1, 2015, in Glendale, Arizona, at the University of Phoenix Stadium. The main star was American singer Katy Perry. She also had special guests: singer Lenny Kravitz and rapper Missy Elliott.

Many people loved the show. It was watched by 118.5 million viewers on NBC. This made it the most-watched halftime show in Super Bowl history at the time. The show even won two Emmy Awards for its amazing lighting and costumes.

How the Show Came Together

Choosing the Main Performer

In 2014, the NFL looked at a few big music stars for the halftime show. Some names mentioned were Coldplay, Katy Perry, and Rihanna.

Fans of "Weird Al" Yankovic also tried to get him to perform. They wanted to promote his album Mandatory Fun. But in the end, Katy Perry was chosen. The NFL officially announced it in November 2014.

Preparing for the Big Stage

Katy Perry worked hard to get ready for the show. She watched videos of past Super Bowl performances. She studied shows by stars like Diana Ross, Beyoncé, Madonna, and Michael Jackson. She even got advice from Bruno Mars, who performed the year before.

Perry wanted her Super Bowl show to be very different from her own concert tour. She spent many months planning it.

Special Guests and Visual Effects

On January 10, 2015, Katy Perry announced that Lenny Kravitz would join her. Later, it was revealed that Missy Elliott would also perform. Perry said she wanted to bring back "a throwback" artist for a "female fun night."

The show used amazing video projection and lighting. Over 600 glowing light globes were used at the start. Images were projected onto the field, covering a huge area.

Designing the Costumes

Katy Perry worked with designer Jeremy Scott to create four different outfits. These costumes had to be changed very quickly, sometimes in just ten seconds!

  • The first was a "Flame Dress," inspired by fiery designs.
  • Next was a "California Girls Bikini" look.
  • Then, a comfy "sweatshirt dress" that looked like pajamas.
  • Her final costume was a sparkly "Moschino Star Gown."

A documentary called Katy Perry: Making of the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show was filmed. It showed all the hard work that went into preparing for the show.

What Happened During the Show

The show began with people on the field holding light globes. They formed the Pepsi logo when seen from above. Katy Perry made a grand entrance, riding a giant golden mechanical lion. She started singing her hit song "Roar."

Next, she sang "Dark Horse." The field turned into a chessboard with cool 3D rendering effects. Acrobats danced around her. After that, Perry joined Lenny Kravitz for a duet of "I Kissed a Girl." Flames shot up behind them. During these songs, Perry wore her "flame-adorned" dress.

The stage then changed into a sunny beach scene. Dancers dressed as sharks, palm trees, and beach balls appeared. Katy Perry changed into a new outfit. She sang a fun mix of "Teenage Dream" and "California Gurls."

Then, rapper Missy Elliott surprised everyone by appearing on stage. She performed her songs "Get Ur Freak On" and "Work It." Katy Perry cheered her on, wearing a special Super Bowl jersey. After Missy Elliott sang "Lose Control," Katy Perry returned.

For her last song, "Firework," Perry wore a sparkling, star-covered gown. She rose into the air on a platform shaped like a shooting star. Fireworks exploded all around her and the stadium. It was a spectacular ending!

How Many People Watched

The halftime show was a huge success! According to Nielsen, 118.5 million people watched it. This was even more than the Super Bowl game itself, which had 114.4 million viewers.

After the show, many of the songs performed became very popular. All three songs sung by Missy Elliott quickly climbed the music charts on iTunes. Katy Perry's songs also saw a big increase in sales.

The Famous Left Shark

During Katy Perry's performance of "Teenage Dream" and "California Gurls," she had dancers in fun beach costumes. Two of these dancers were dressed as sharks. The shark on the left side of the stage became very famous!

This "Left Shark" danced in a unique way. Its moves were a bit different and out of sync with the other shark. People found it very funny, and "Left Shark" quickly became an internet meme. It was all over social media like Facebook and Twitter.

The dancers were later identified as Scott Myrick (Right Shark) and Bryan Gaw (Left Shark). The choreographer, RJ Durell, said the sharks were told to have fun and act like cartoon characters. The director, Hamish Hamilton, said the idea for the sharks came from a funny performance he saw years ago.
