Suresh Channabasappa Angadi (born June 1, 1955 – died September 23, 2020) was an important Indian politician. He served as the Union Minister of State for Railways of India from May 2019 until his passing in September 2020. He was also a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha (India's lower house of Parliament) from 2004 to 2020. He was a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the state of Karnataka.
He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Belagavi area four times in a row, starting in 2004. He was re-elected in 2009, 2014, and 2019, and he never lost an election.
Early Life and Education
Suresh Angadi was born on June 1, 1955. His parents, Somavva and Chanabasappa, were farmers. He grew up in a village called Kanvi Karvinakoppa, near Belagavi.
He went to college in Belagavi. He earned a bachelor's degree in commerce from S.S.S. Samithi College of Commerce. After that, he also studied law and received his law degree from Raja Lakhamgouda Law College in Belagavi.
Political Journey
Angadi started his political journey in 1996 with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He first became the vice president of the party's unit in the Belagavi district. In 2001, he was chosen to be the president of the district unit. He held this position until 2004.
In 2004, he was chosen by his party to run for election in the Belagavi Lok Sabha constituency. He won against his opponent from the Indian National Congress party. This made him a Member of the 14th Lok Sabha. He was then re-elected to the Lok Sabha from Belagavi three more times: in 2009, 2014, and 2019. He was known for never losing an election he ran in.
Minister of Railways
In May 2019, Suresh Angadi became the Minister of State for Railways. He worked in this important role until his death in September 2020. As a minister, he helped start several new projects.
One of his key approvals was the Suburban Commuter Rail project in Bangalore. This project aimed to make train travel easier for people living in and around the city. He also signed an agreement to build a new railway station near the Bangalore International Airport. This station would help connect the airport to the city center.
Angadi also helped introduce India's first private 'roll-on, roll-off' freight service. This service allowed goods trucks to be carried on trains for 682 kilometers between Bangalore and Solapur. This helped move goods more easily and efficiently.
During his time as Minister, he also focused on making railways more energy efficient. He encouraged railway stations to become "green certified" and worked with industries to share ideas on energy management. He also helped introduce new train services, especially in the South Western division.
When the COVID-19 lockdown in India began, he helped arrange special trains across India. These trains, including Rajdhani express and mail and express trains, helped migrant workers travel safely.
Besides his political work, he also led the Suresh Angadi Education Foundation. This foundation runs schools and colleges across Karnataka.
Death
Suresh Angadi tested positive for COVID-19 on September 11, 2020. At first, he did not show any symptoms. Later, he was admitted to the AIIMS hospital in New Delhi.
Sadly, he passed away on September 23, 2020, at the age of 65. He was the first Indian Union minister to die from COVID-19. Due to COVID-19 rules, his body could not be taken back to Belagavi. He was buried in Delhi following the necessary health protocols.
