Surgoinsville is a town located in Hawkins County, Tennessee, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,882 people lived there, which was a bit more than in 2010. Surgoinsville is part of a larger area known as the "Tri-Cities" region, which includes Kingsport, Bristol (Tennessee), and Bristol (Virginia).

History of Surgoinsville

Surgoinsville became an official town in 1815. It was named after its founder, Major James Surguine. He was a French Huguenot, which means he was a French Protestant.

Geography of Surgoinsville

Surgoinsville is located in the northeastern part of Hawkins County. It sits near the Holston River. A main road, U.S. Route 11W, runs through the northern part of the town. This highway connects Surgoinsville to Kingsport, which is about 18 miles northeast, and to Rogersville, the county seat, which is about 10 miles southwest. Tennessee State Route 346 is the town's Main Street and works with US 11W as a business route.

The United States Census Bureau says that Surgoinsville covers a total area of about 5.6 square miles (14.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a small amount being water.

Interesting Places in Surgoinsville

There are a few interesting spots to check out in and around Surgoinsville:

• Fudge Farm: Just east of town, you can find Fudge Farm. This is a historic farmhouse that dates back to around 1815.
• Lustron House: Surgoinsville also has a special type of home called a Lustron house. These houses were made from steel and were built after World War II. There are only a few of them left, especially in the southern style.
• Bellamy Store: This building used to be a hardware store and a general store in the early 1900s. Today, it's a popular place for bluegrass music concerts.

Town Improvements

For a long time, Surgoinsville was one of the few towns in Tennessee that didn't have a public sewer system. This caused some environmental and health worries and also made it hard for new businesses to come to town.

However, in 2014, work began on a big project to build a modern sewage treatment system. This project cost about $5 million and was finished in 2016. Now, Surgoinsville has a proper sewer system, which is good for the environment and helps the town grow.

The Phipps Bend Industrial Park is also located near Surgoinsville. It's one of the biggest industrial areas in northeastern Tennessee. Many different factories and businesses are located there, providing jobs for over 2,000 people.
