Sursk (Russian: Сурск) is a small town located in Penza Oblast, Russia. An oblast is like a large region or province. Sursk is found in the Gorodishchensky District.
The town sits on the left bank of the Sura River. It is about 92 kilometers (57 miles) east of Penza. Penza is the main city of the oblast. In 2010, about 7,034 people lived in Sursk.
History of Sursk
How Sursk Started
Sursk began around the year 1860. It was first a small village. Its original name was Nikolsky Khutor (Нико́льский Ху́тор).
Becoming a Town
Many years later, in 1953, Nikolsky Khutor grew bigger. It was officially given the status of a town. At this time, its name was changed to Sursk. The new name comes from the Sura River, which flows nearby.
