Susan Campbell Bartoletti, born on November 18, 1958, is an American author. She writes amazing books for kids and young adults. Some of her famous books are Kids on Strike! and Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow.
Susan grew up in Pennsylvania. She went to college at Marywood University and the University of Scranton.
Susan started her career as an English teacher for eighth graders. She loved watching her students write and create their own stories. This inspired her to become a writer herself. Susan said that seeing her students grow as writers made her want to "practice what I preached." So, she joined a writing group.
She sold her first short story in 1989. In 1992, she published her first picture book, Silver at Night. Susan had a strict routine. She would wake up early to write before going to teach. In 1997, she decided to become a full-time writer.
Since then, her books have won many awards. These include the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award for Nonfiction and the SCBWI Golden Kite Award. She also won the Jane Addams Children's Book Award. In 2006, she received a Newbery Honor.
Today, Susan teaches writing classes at different universities. She also leads workshops to help other writers. She lives with her family in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
