The Boy Who Dared is an exciting book written in 2008 by an American author named Susan Campbell Bartoletti. This story is based on the real-life events of Helmuth Hübener. He was a very young person who faced the highest punishment from the Nazis during World War II. Helmuth was taken by the authorities and sadly died on October 27, 1942.

The author, Susan Campbell Bartoletti, took a small part of a true story from her earlier book, Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow (2006), and turned it into this full novel. That earlier book was even recognized as a Newbery Honor Book, which is a special award for great children's literature.

About The Boy Who Dared

The Boy Who Dared tells the brave story of Helmuth Hübener. He was a teenager living in Germany during World War II. At this time, a group called the Nazis, led by Adolf Hitler, had a lot of power. They controlled what people could say and think.

Helmuth's Courageous Actions

Helmuth believed in speaking the truth, even when it was dangerous. He secretly listened to radio broadcasts from other countries. These broadcasts shared news that was different from what the Nazis wanted people to believe. Helmuth then wrote down this true information.

He created flyers and shared them with others. These flyers told people the truth about the war and the Nazi government. This was a very risky thing to do. The Nazis did not allow anyone to disagree with them.

The Consequences of Daring

Because of his brave actions, Helmuth was caught by the Nazi police. He was put on trial and given a very harsh punishment. He was the youngest person to receive this punishment from the Nazis during World War II. His story shows how important it is to stand up for what is right, even when it's hard.
