Susan H. Rodger is an American computer scientist. She is well-known for her work in computer science education. She helped create the software JFLAP and has worked on it for over twenty years.

JFLAP is a special computer program. It helps students learn about how computers understand languages and how they process information. Dr. Rodger also helped start programs where students teach each other computer science. She also worked to bring computer learning into middle and high schools using a program called Alice. She has also served on important boards that support computer science education.

About Susan Rodger

Susan H. Rodger was born in Columbia, South Carolina. She studied at North Carolina State University, where she earned two bachelor's degrees in 1983. She got one degree in computer science and another in mathematics.

Later, she went to Purdue University. There, she earned her master's degree in computer science in 1985. She then completed her Ph.D., which is the highest university degree, in computer science in 1989.

After finishing her studies, Dr. Rodger became a professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1994, she moved to Duke University. At Duke, she became a professor of computer science. She was promoted several times, becoming a full professor in 2008.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Susan Rodger has received many awards for her important work. These awards recognize her contributions to teaching computer science.

  • 2006: She was named an ACM Distinguished Member. This is a special honor from a major computer science organization.
  • 2014: She received the ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award. This award celebrates excellent computer science teachers.

  • 2019: She also received the David and Janet Vaughan Brooks Award.
