Susan Louise Shatter (1943–2011) was an American artist. She was famous for her landscape paintings. Instead of green fields, she often painted volcanic canyons and rocky coastlines. She used earthy colors in her artwork.
One of her well-known paintings is Winged Shadow, Waimea Canyon, Kauai. This painting is now at the Honolulu Museum of Art. It shows her modern way of looking at wild, empty landscapes. Her art can be found in many public collections. These include the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Susan Shatter was born in New York in 1943. She studied art at several places. She earned her first art degree from Pratt Institute in 1965. Later, she received a master's degree from Boston University in 1972.
Her Work and Teaching
Susan Shatter was a very important artist. In 2005, she became the president of the National Academy of Design. She had been a member of this academy since 1995. For many years, she taught painting. She taught watercolor painting at the National Academy of Design. She also taught at The Art Students League of New York.
She also served on the board for the Skowhegan School. She taught art at other colleges too. These included Brooklyn College and the University of Pennsylvania. Susan Shatter was married to Paul Brown. They had one child, Scott Brown Shatter.
