Susanne Schröter was born in 1957. She is a modern Anthropologist. This means she studies human societies and cultures. Her main work looks at Islam, how people understand Gender (being male or female), and how conflicts happen.

She leads a research group that studies modern ideas about government and society in Islamic countries. She also works on a project about women's rights in Indonesia. This project looks at how Muslim and non-religious women activists work to gain more power.

Her Studies and Early Work

Susanne Schröter studied many subjects at the University of Mainz in Germany. She learned about anthropology, which is the study of humans. She also studied sociology, cultural studies, political science, and education. She finished her first degree in 1986 with very high honors.

From 1986 to 1990, she worked at the Women's Museum in Wiesbaden. After that, she became a teacher at the University of Mainz. She also managed the anthropology library there. In 1994, she earned her Ph.D. in anthropology. Her Ph.D. paper was about how "masculinity" and "femininity" are understood in Melanesia.

She continued her research at the University of Mainz and later at the Frobenius-Institute in Frankfurt. In 1999, she completed another important academic step called "Habilitation." This work was about religion and social structure in East Indonesia. After this, she became a special lecturer at Goethe University Frankfurt. In 1999, she was also a visiting professor at the University of Mainz.

Her Work in the 2000s and Beyond

In the early 2000s, Susanne Schröter visited and taught at famous universities in the United States. She was a visiting researcher at the University of Chicago and a visiting professor at Yale University. She also taught at Goethe University Frankfurt.

She helped organize a conference in 2003 about Christianity in Indonesia. In 2004, she taught at the University of Trier and became an Associate Professor at Goethe University Frankfurt. Later that year, she became a professor of Southeast Asian studies at Passau University. She worked there until 2008.

In 2005, she organized a conference at Passau University about Islam and gender in Southeast Asia. Since 2008, she has been a professor at Goethe University Frankfurt. She studies how societies change after colonial times. She is also part of a group that advises the Austrian Documentation Center for Political Islam.

Susanne Schröter has studied and written about the actions of a small group of radical Muslims in Germany. She has explained how this group behaves and what their goals are. She has pointed out that these actions are done "in the name of Islam."
