The Story of Susie Q
A Ghostly Encounter in Willow Valley
The movie begins in 1955 in a town called Willow Valley, Washington. A teenager named Susie Quinn is getting ready for her Winter Formal dance. She and her boyfriend, Johnny Angel, are in a car when another driver, who isn't paying attention, causes their car to crash into a river. Sadly, Susie and Johnny drown.
Forty years later, a teenager named Zach Sands moves into Susie's old house. Zach's father had also passed away in a car accident, which made Zach feel very sad and stop playing basketball. Zach moves with his mom, Penny, who starts a new job as a news reporter. At his new high school, Zach makes friends with the drama club. But he also makes an enemy in Ray Kovich, whose father, Roger, is a banker.
Discovering Susie's Secret
One day, while fishing with his younger sister, Teri, Zach finds a special bracelet. When he touches it, Susie's ghost appears right in front of him! Zach soon learns that Susie died 40 years ago. That night, Susie visits Zach again and shows him that he is the only person who can see her.
Susie even follows Zach to school. She tries to get his attention by causing a little trouble in his class. She apologizes, but keeps causing mischief until Zach agrees to help her.
Saving Susie's Family Home
Zach visits Susie's parents and discovers they are about to lose their home. A local bank is demanding a huge payment of $25,000 because a very important paper, called a title deed, is missing. This is part of a bigger plan by Roger Kovich, the banker, to take over the town.
Susie tells Zach that before she died, her grandfather was looking for this deed. She realizes she's still a ghost because she made a mistake by telling her grandfather to rest instead of helping him find the deed. This deed could have saved her family's land. Zach now understands how much Susie needs his help to find it.
The Race to Find the Deed
Zach's sister, Teri, discovers that a lot of the town's land actually belongs to the Quinn family. It becomes a race against time to find the missing title deed. The police get involved, and Roger Kovich, the banker, starts making his own plans to stop them.
The police arrest Zach and Teri, but Susie's ghost manages to scare the officer, allowing them to escape!
A Happy Ending
Finally, Zach and Teri make it to the local news station. They arrive just in time to give their mom all the information about the Quinn family's history. This important story is broadcast live on television!
After the news report, the bankers give up and apologize to the Quinns. The Kovich family leaves town to avoid getting into trouble. Zach also starts playing basketball again, honoring his late father.
With her mistake fixed, Susie returns to the bridge where she died. Zach follows her there. Susie tells him that his life is just beginning and that he can keep playing basketball for both her and his father. Susie then reunites with the ghosts of her boyfriend, Johnny, and her grandfather in Johnny's car. Before they leave for heaven, Susie gives Zach her bracelet. They say an emotional goodbye, and Zach tells her he loves her. In the car, Susie's grandfather briefly wakes up and calls her by her mother's name, Betsy. Susie corrects him and tells him to go back to sleep because they have a long trip ahead.
In the very last scene, Zach meets a girl who looks exactly like Susie. She introduces herself as Maggie, hinting at a new beginning for Zach.
