History of Sutherland

Sutherland became an important stop on the Southside Railroad in the middle of the 1800s. Over time, this railroad line changed names. It became the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad in 1870. Later, it was part of the Norfolk and Western Railway and is now used by the Norfolk Southern Railway.

Sutherland also has a place in history, especially during the American Civil War. On April 2, 1865, a significant event known as the Battle of Sutherland's Station occurred here. This battle was an important part of the Appomattox Campaign, which was a series of events leading up to the end of the war.
