Sutherland Springs is a small place in Texas, United States. It's not a city or town with its own government, but rather an unincorporated community. This means it's part of Wilson County, Texas. You can find Sutherland Springs on U.S. Highway 87 where it meets Farm to Market Road 539. It sits on land that was once a Spanish land grant belonging to Manuel Tarin.
History of Sutherland Springs
Sutherland Springs was officially planned and laid out in 1854. It was named after John Sutherland Jr., who was an important early settler in the area. The community has had a post office helping people send and receive mail since 1851, even before the town was formally planned.
Geography of the Area
Sutherland Springs is divided by a waterway called Cibolo Creek. The older part of Sutherland Springs is located on the south side of the creek. A newer part, which is mostly in ruins today, is found on the north side of the creek.
