Suwa Province (諏方国, Suwa-no kuni) was an old province in the area that is now Nagano Prefecture in Japan. This region is located on the large island of Honshū. Suwa Province existed for a short time, from 721 to 731.

What Was Suwa Province?

Suwa Province was a special area created by the government in ancient Japan. It was like a small state or region with its own rules and leaders, but it was part of the larger Japanese empire. These provinces were set up to help the government manage the country better.

A Brief History of Suwa Province

Suwa Province was first created in the year 721. This happened during the time when Empress Genshō was the ruler of Japan. She was an important empress who helped shape early Japanese history.

However, Suwa Province did not last for very long. According to an old Japanese history book called Shoku Nihongi, Suwa Province existed for only ten years. It was established in 721 and then stopped being a separate province in 731. We don't know exactly why it was dissolved so quickly, but it became part of another larger province.
