Svetozar Ćorović (born May 29, 1875 – died April 17, 1919) was a writer from Bosnia and Herzegovina. He wrote many stories and books. His stories often showed what life was like in the region of Herzegovina, especially in the city of Mostar. His brother, Vladimir Ćorović, was a famous historian.

About Svetozar Ćorović

Svetozar Ćorović was born in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on May 29, 1875. At that time, Mostar was part of the Ottoman Empire. He went to elementary school and trade school there.

Starting in 1887, he began to publish his writings. His stories appeared in many newspapers and magazines. Some of these were Golub (The Pigeon) and Bosanska Vila (Bosnian Fairy). He was also an active member of a group in Mostar called "Gusle." This group focused on Serbian literature and culture.

Ćorović helped edit the Neretljanin calendar in 1894 and 1895. He also started and edited the magazine Zora (Dawn) from 1896 to 1901. Later, he worked for the Narod (People) newspaper. He was good friends with other well-known writers like Jovan Dučić and Aleksa Šantić. One of Šantić's sisters, Radojka, became Ćorović's wife.

Challenges and Later Life

In 1908, during a time called the Bosnian crisis, he had to leave his home. He went to Italy. Later, he was chosen to be a delegate for the Bosnian Parliament in 1910.

Before the first Balkan War in 1912, he wrote a play called Zulumćar (The Despot). This play mixed patriotic ideas with traditional folk stories. It became one of his most famous works.

When World War I began in 1914, Ćorović was arrested. He was sent to a difficult camp in Hungary. There, he became very sick. This illness eventually led to his early death. He returned to Mostar in 1917, still very ill.

For the next two years, he fought against tuberculosis. This disease had badly affected his body. He died in Mostar on April 17, 1919. He passed away after suffering from harsh treatment and the illness he caught in the camp.

His Writings

Svetozar Ćorović wrote many different types of stories. He published many collections of short stories. He also wrote several novels and plays. His works often showed the lives of people in Herzegovina.

  • Majčina Sultanija (Mother's Sultana, 1906): This novel tells the story of a unique woman in a small town.
  • Stojan Mutikaša (1907): This book follows a poor farm boy who becomes a rich but bad merchant.
  • Jarani (Buddies, 1911): This story shows the lives of the Muslim people in Herzegovina. It takes place during a time of change as Turkish rule was ending.
