The Swallow Boathouse is a special old boathouse found on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, United States. It sits in a quiet cove on the west side of Moultonborough Neck, in the town of Moultonborough. This boathouse was built between 1908 and 1910. It is known for its amazing design, showing off styles like Tudor Revival and Shingle style. The boathouse is now used only by its owners. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 because of its importance.

What Does the Swallow Boathouse Look Like?

The Swallow Boathouse is located on the west side of Moultonborough Neck. This is a long piece of land that reaches into Lake Winnipesaukee. Lake Winnipesaukee is the biggest lake in New Hampshire. The boathouse is in Kona Bay, a small inlet. This inlet is bordered by Swallow Point to the north and Wallace Island to the south.

How Big is the Boathouse?

The boathouse is made of wood and is about 80 feet (24 meters) long. It is also about 37 feet (11 meters) wide. It stands on eight stone supports that are in about 10 feet (3 meters) of water. The boathouse is set back from the shore. You can reach it by walking on a wooden path that is 138 feet (42 meters) long.

Special Features of the Boathouse

The base of the boathouse is made from strong timbers. It has three main sections. Each section is topped with a large gambrel roof. A gambrel roof has two different slopes on each side. There are also small towers called cupolas on each roof section. Part of the inside of the boathouse used to be open to the water. Now, that area has a floor.

History of the Swallow Boathouse

The Swallow Boathouse was designed by an architect named Harry J. Carlson. It was built between 1908 and 1910. The long wooden walkway used to have a roof over it. There was also a matching building on land. However, these parts were removed after being damaged by storms.

Why Was It Built?

The boathouse was built to hold a large yacht named the Swallow. A yacht is a type of boat. Herbert Dumaresque owned the Kona Farm estate where the boathouse is located. He brought the large yacht to the lake by train. The boathouse is very big, like ones used for business. Harry J. Carlson might have based his design on an old boathouse from the 1830s. This older boathouse was at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Carlson then added fancy details from the Shingle and Tudor styles to make it unique.
