Swan River Valley facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Swan River Valley is a special area located in the western part of Manitoba, a province in Canada. Even though it's called a "valley," it's not actually a typical river valley. It gets its name from the Swan River, which flows right through the middle of the region.

This area is surrounded by tall lands on three sides, which is why it's called a valley. To the northwest, you'll find the Porcupine Mountains. The Duck Mountains are to the south, and Thunderhill is in the western part of the region. All these high areas are part of something called the Manitoba Escarpment. So, while it's known as the Swan River Valley, it's more like a basin surrounded by hills and mountains rather than a valley carved by a river. Sometimes, even parts of Saskatchewan right next door are considered part of "the valley" by people who live there!
