How Swanston Estates Started
The Swanston Estates area has an interesting history! Some of the first people to live here were Nicholas and Henrietta Gosselink. They helped start a church called Hope Community Church, which is now known as Emmanuel Church, located on Ethan Way. Also, land for the D.W. Babcock Elementary School and Park was given by the uncle of another early resident. This shows how important community was from the very beginning.
The Swanston Family and Their Land
The neighborhood gets its name from the Swanston family. They used to own a huge cattle ranch here, about 2,800-acre (11 km2) in size! They also had a meatpacking plant near the Southern Pacific train tracks. The family owned this land from 1914 all the way until the 1940s.
Later, in the late 1940s, the Swanston family sold a big part of their land to the state of California. The state wanted to build a big fairground called Cal Expo there. However, the state didn't end up using all the land they bought for Cal Expo. So, in 1970, they sold the extra land for $7.3 million. After that, the area started to grow with new shops, businesses, and homes, turning into the neighborhood we see today.
