Monotropsis odorata is a very special plant. It is also known as sweet pinesap or pygmy pipes. This plant is the only one of its kind in a group called a genus. It is part of the Ericaceae family, which includes plants like blueberries.

Where It Lives

Monotropsis odorata grows naturally in the Appalachian Mountains. These mountains are located in the southeastern part of the United States. This plant is not very common and can be hard to find in its natural home.

How It Gets Food

Most plants make their own food using sunlight. They do this with a green substance called chlorophyll. But Monotropsis odorata is different. It does not have any chlorophyll.

Instead, this plant gets its food from fungi. It is like a tiny parasite that takes nutrients from fungi. These fungi are connected to nearby trees through a special partnership called a mycorrhiza. The fungi help the trees, and Monotropsis odorata uses this connection to get its food.

What It Smells Like

Monotropsis odorata has a very pleasant smell. People say it smells like spices such as nutmeg or cinnamon. Some also think it smells like violets.
