Switzerland is a small, quiet place in Jasper County, South Carolina, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's managed by the county.

This community is part of a larger area called the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. This means it's connected to other nearby towns and cities for things like jobs and services.

The Story Behind the Name

How Switzerland Got Its Unique Name

The name "Switzerland" comes from the very first people who settled here. These were Swiss natives who had traveled all the way from Switzerland to South Carolina. They first tried to settle in a place called Purrysburg, which was along the Savannah River, close to where Hardeeville is today.

However, life in Purrysburg was tough. They faced challenges like competition from the nearby city of Savannah and health problems. Because of these difficulties, many of the Swiss settlers decided to move further inland. They found a new spot and created this small community, giving it the name "Switzerland" to remember their home country.

Changes Over Time

In the past 100 years, the number of people living in Switzerland has become smaller. Meanwhile, nearby towns like Ridgeland and Hardeeville have grown quite a bit. Even though it's a smaller community now, Switzerland still holds its unique history.
