The name "Jasper County" comes from a brave soldier named William Jasper. He was a sergeant during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). Sergeant Jasper was known for his incredible bravery. One famous story tells how he saved the flag of Fort Moultrie during a battle in 1776. Even after being badly wounded, he put the flag back up, inspiring his fellow soldiers.
Because of his courage and dedication, many places were named after him. This was a way to remember his heroic actions and his service to the newly forming United States.
