The Hyperolius swynnertoni is a type of frog that belongs to the Hyperoliidae family. It is also known as the Swynnerton's reed frog. Sometimes, a related group called "broadleyi" is known as the Broadley's tree frog.
You can find this frog in the eastern uplands of Zimbabwe and nearby Mozambique.
About Its Name
The Hyperolius swynnertoni frog was first described in 1941. A scientist named Vivian Frederick Maynard FitzSimons gave it its official description. He found the frog in the Chirinda Forest Botanical Reserve in Zimbabwe.
The forest was largely on land owned by Mr. C. M. F. Swynnerton. The frog was named after him to honor his connection to the area. This frog is part of a larger group of frogs called the Hyperolius viridiflavus superspecies.
What It Looks Like
This frog is one of the larger Hyperolius species. Adult male frogs can grow up to about 32 millimeters (1.26 inches) long. Female frogs are a bit bigger, reaching about 35 millimeters (1.38 inches) in length. This measurement is from their snout to their rear end.
The frog's back often has dark, wiggly lines on a lighter background. Sometimes, it has light dots on a dark background instead. Another type of this frog, called Hyperolius marmoratus broadleyi, might have different patterns. It can have a light stripe down the middle of its back. It might also have two light stripes on its sides, running from its eyes to its legs. These side stripes usually have a red line in the middle. The patterns can change even among frogs from the same area.
Where It Lives and How It's Doing
The Hyperolius swynnertoni frog lives near water. You can find it in swamps, rivers, and lakes. It likes areas with plants growing out of the water. These places can be in savannas, grasslands, or at the edges of forests.
This frog is also good at living in places changed by humans. You might see it in gardens or on cultivated land. They lay their eggs directly in the water. They use many different types of water bodies for breeding. This includes small temporary puddles and large permanent ponds.
The Hyperolius swynnertoni is a very common frog. It can adapt well to different environments. It quickly moves into new water areas that are created. Because of this, there are no major threats to this frog species. It is thought to live in the Gungunyana Forest Reserve as well.
