The Sycuan Institute on Tribal Gaming is a special part of San Diego State University. It helps people learn about and research how Native American tribes manage their gaming businesses. This is all part of the bigger world of hospitality (like hotels and restaurants) and tourism management (like planning trips).
How the Institute is Supported
The Institute is run by the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program at San Diego State University (SDSU). It gets its support from a special fund set up by the tribal council of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation.
The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation gave $5 million to start this fund in 2005. They also continue to give money each year to help the Institute keep going.
In 2019, the Institute teamed up with the National Indian Gaming Commission. This partnership helps them collect more information and do more research about tribal gaming.
What Students Learn
The Institute offers a special college degree called a Bachelor of Science (B.S.). Students can choose to focus on Tribal Casino Operations Management. This means they learn how to run tribal casinos.
The courses teach students about many things. They learn how casinos work and how to market them. They also study the laws and rules for tribal gaming. Students learn about the social, political, and cultural side of tribal gaming too. There are also classes on how to encourage responsible gaming.
Research and Studies
The Institute also has a research center. This center helps pay for and share studies about tribal government gaming. Their goal is to provide fair and accurate information on these topics.
