History of Sylvan-Highlands
How Sylvan-Highlands Got Its Name
In 1850, a pioneer named Nathan B. Jones settled in this area. He created a plan for a community he called "Zion Town." It's not clear if he named it after a nearby hill called Mount Zion.
When they wanted to open a post office, the name "Zion" was already used by two other post offices in Oregon. So, a resident suggested "Sylvan." This name comes from Silvanus, a Roman god of the woods. The post office opened in 1890 and closed in 1906.
Nathan B. Jones, who was known for living a quiet life, hoped Zion Town would become the new capital of Oregon. He passed away in 1894. The Sylvan post office was located where Sunset Highway, Scholls Ferry Road, and Skyline Boulevard meet today, inside Portland.
