Early Life and Family
Sylvi Uino was born in Pieksämäki, Finland, on March 12, 1900. She was the fourth child in her family. Her father, Kauno Uino, was a church leader. Her mother's name was Emilia Salome Stenberg.
After her father passed away, Sylvi's family moved to Mikkeli. There, she continued her schooling. Later, she moved to Helsinki. She planned to study law, but she decided to work instead.
Marriage and Children
In 1926, Sylvi married Urho Kekkonen. They had met while working at a government security agency. Two years later, in 1928, they had twin sons. Their sons were named Matti and Taneli.
Sylvi Kekkonen was known for her strong personality. She passed away in Helsinki on December 2, 1974.
Role as First Lady of Finland
Sylvi Kekkonen became the First Lady of Finland in 1956. Her husband, Urho Kekkonen, became the President. She believed her most important job was to support him.
She also helped many events and projects. She was a patron, which means she supported them. Later in her life, her health became weaker. This meant she had to attend fewer public events.

Sylvi Kekkonen was a talented writer. She wrote two novels. These were Käytävä (published in 1955) and Amalia (published in 1958). Her novel Amalia was very popular. It was translated into eight different languages.
She also wrote two collections of short stories. These were Kotikaivolla (1952) and Lankkuaidan suojassa (1968). The book Lankkuaidan suojassa was about her own life. Many people think it is her best work.
Her writing often showed feelings and ideas. She also wrote about things from a young person's point of view. Sylvi Kekkonen also wrote essays. Her first published work, Kiteitä (1949), was a collection of essays.
She also helped her husband with his writing. She would edit and give feedback on his work.
To remember Sylvi Kekkonen, a special event is held every year. It is called the Sylvi Symposiumi. This literary meeting started in 2000. It takes place in Pieksämäki, her hometown. There is also a park in Pieksämäki named after her.
