São José dos Pinhais is a city in Brazil. It is located in the state of Paraná. This city is part of the larger Curitiba Metropolitan Region.

What's in a Name?
The name of São José dos Pinhais has both a religious and a natural meaning. "São José" is a tribute to Saint Joseph. "Pinhais" refers to the many pine tree forests that once covered the area. So, the name means "Saint Joseph of the Pine Forests."
A Look at History
The city of São José dos Pinhais officially became a municipality on July 16, 1852. This was made possible by a law from the old province of São Paulo. The city council, which helps manage the city, started its work on January 8, 1853. Later, on December 27, 1897, the village was finally recognized as a city.
In 1958, Nereu Ramos, who was a former President of Brazil, sadly passed away in a plane crash near São José dos Pinhais.
Where is São José dos Pinhais?
São José dos Pinhais is a growing city. Its population has increased quickly over time. For example, in 2000, about 196,000 people lived there. By 2008, this number grew to over 280,000 residents.
The city is the fifth largest in the Curitiba metropolitan area. It also ranks third in the Human Development Index (HDI) for its region. São José dos Pinhais has 21 different districts. Guatupê is the most populated district, with 16,743 people living there in 2010.
Important Industries and the Airport
São José dos Pinhais is a major center for car manufacturing in Brazil. Big car companies like Volkswagen, Audi, Nissan, and Renault have factories here.
The city is also home to the Afonso Pena International Airport. This is the main airport for the state of Paraná.
Protecting Nature
The municipality helps protect important natural areas.
- About 12% of the Guaratuba Environmental Protection Area is within São José dos Pinhais. This area was created in 1992 to protect nature.
- Around 13% of the Guaricana National Park is also located here. This park was created in 2014 to protect a mountainous region of the Atlantic Forest.
