History of Tàrbena
Tàrbena has a unique past, marked by big changes in its population. Long ago, the village was mostly home to people called Moriscos. These were people of Muslim heritage who had been forced to convert to Christianity.
The Empty Village
During the time of the Spanish Inquisition, many Moriscos were forced to leave Spain. This event is known as the expulsion of the Moriscos. Because of this, the people of Tàrbena, who were mostly Moriscos, had to leave their homes. The village became almost empty.
New Beginnings: Repopulation
After the Moriscos left, the village was empty for a while. Then, a powerful shipping owner from Valencia, who owned the land around Tàrbena, had an idea. He traded livestock, especially pigs, between the mainland and the Balearic Islands, like Mallorca. He also brought back special Mallorcan black pudding, which was very popular in Valencia.
He thought, "What if I bring people from Mallorca to Tàrbena to make this black pudding here?" This way, he could save money on transport and also collect rent from the villagers.
So, he brought many families from Mallorca to Tàrbena. These families were often poor but very hardworking. He gave them the empty houses and land for free. They quickly started making different kinds of sausages and puddings from pigs.
Tàrbena's Food Traditions
Thanks to these new settlers from Mallorca, Tàrbena became famous for its delicious pork products. Even today, the village continues this tradition. They make:
- Butifarras: A type of sausage.
- Blanquets: Another kind of sausage, often white in color.
- Sobrassada: A soft, spreadable sausage.
This unique history of repopulation by Mallorcan families makes Tàrbena a special place with strong cultural ties to Mallorca, especially through its food.
