History of Täuffelen

Täuffelen was first mentioned in old writings in 1228. Back then, it was called Choufalli. Later, in 1280, its name changed to Tofallie.

People lived near Lake Biel during the Stone Age and the Late Bronze Age. Old tools and items have been found in the Täuffelenmoos bogs. Both Täuffelen and a nearby village, Gerolfingen, grew from ancient Celtic settlements.

During the Middle Ages, Täuffelen was likely part of the Walperswil area. In 1247, it became part of the land owned by the Count of Neuchâtel-Nidau. The Counts ruled for about 150 years. Then, in 1398, the city of Bern took control of the whole region, including Täuffelen.

Under Bern's rule, Täuffelen, Gerolfingen, Hagneck, and Epsach were grouped together. They formed the Epsach Quarter of the Nidau region. After the French invaded Switzerland in 1798, Täuffelen became part of the Seeland district. In 1803, it moved to the Nidau district.

The Village Church

The village church, named St. Peter and Paul, was first mentioned in 1228. It might have been built on top of an even older Roman settlement. The main part of the church is built in an old Romanesque style.

In 1528, Bern adopted the Protestant faith. All its lands, including Täuffelen, followed this change. Today, the church serves several nearby villages. A local Catholic church was built in Täuffelen in 1971-72.

Changes in Village Life

Gerolfingen village used to have a harbor on the lake. It was a center for trade and fishing. People in Täuffelen grew crops and grapes on the hills. They also fished in the lake.

In 1846, the first factory opened in Täuffelen. It made parts for watches and clocks. This factory started to change the village from a farming community to an industrial one. More factories followed.

Between 1868 and 1880, big projects helped control the water levels of the Jura lakes. This created new land and stopped floods. In 1916, Täuffelen got a train connection to Biel and Ins. The train company even moved its main office to Täuffelen in 1944.

While factories grew, cherry orchards also thrived in the farming areas. In 1950, a secondary school opened in Täuffelen. Students from nearby towns came to study there.
