T. Glynne Davies
Thomas Glynne Davies (born January 12, 1926 – died April 1988), known as T. Glynne Davies, was a famous Welsh poet, writer, and broadcaster. He worked on television and radio. T. Glynne Davies was born in Llanrwst, a town in Denbighshire, Wales.
A Talented Writer and Poet
T. Glynne Davies was a very talented writer. In 1951, he won a special award at the National Eisteddfod. This is a big festival in Wales that celebrates Welsh culture. He was "crowned a bard" for his winning poem, Adfeilion (which means "Ruins"). This happened in his hometown of Llanrwst.
He wrote many other important works. These include a poem called Hedydd yn yr Haul ("Skylark in the sun") from 1969. He also wrote a long novel titled Marged in 1974.
His Work and Important Legacy
During the Second World War, T. Glynne Davies worked in a coal mine. He was a "Bevin Boy" at a colliery in Oakdale, near Caerphilly. Bevin Boys were young men who had to work in coal mines during the war. This was instead of joining the army.
Later, Davies became a news reporter for BBC Radio starting in 1957. He also hosted a very popular Welsh language radio show. It was called Bore Da, which means "Good morning". He presented this show from 1970 to 1976.
In 2011, the Welsh television channel S4C created a special award. It was named the T. Glynne Davies Scholarship to honor his contributions. This scholarship helps new talent in broadcasting.
His Family Life
T. Glynne Davies had four sons. Two of his sons are also well-known. Gareth Glyn is a composer and broadcaster. Geraint Glynne Davies is a member of the Welsh folk music group Ar Log. Geraint also started his own business, Geraint Davies Hearing.
Another son, Aled Glynne, was an editor at BBC Radio Cymru. He later started his own production company called Goriad. Owen Glynne Davies is a leading puppeteer who performs in Welsh. He is known for the DVD series "Fflic a Fflac". He has also worked with other puppet companies.
T. Glynne Davies passed away in Cardiff in 1988.
