Thomas Ringland Stockdale (born March 28, 1828, died January 8, 1899) was an important politician from Mississippi. He served as a representative for his state in the United States government.

About Thomas Stockdale
Early Life and Education
Thomas Stockdale was born on March 28, 1828, near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. He went to college at Jefferson College, finishing in 1856. He later earned a master's degree in 1859.
After college, he moved to Mississippi. He worked as a teacher in Pike County. He also studied law at the University of Mississippi. In 1859, he became a lawyer and started his practice in Woodville, Mississippi.
Serving in the Civil War
During the American Civil War, Thomas Stockdale joined the Confederate States Army. He started as a private soldier in 1861. He was promoted several times, becoming a lieutenant, then a captain, and finally a major.
He served as an adjutant, helping his regiment with important tasks. Later, he led a group of soldiers in the 4th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment. He then became the second-in-command of that regiment, with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
After the War
After the Civil War ended, Stockdale returned to his law practice. He settled in Summit, Mississippi.
He became involved in politics. In 1868, he was chosen as a delegate for the Democratic National Convention. This is a big meeting where the Democratic Party chooses its candidate for president. He also helped with presidential elections in 1872 and 1884.
A Career in Congress
In 1886, Thomas Stockdale was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served four terms in Congress, from March 4, 1887, to March 3, 1895.
He tried to be re-elected in 1894 but was not successful.
Judge and Later Life
In 1896, Stockdale was appointed to be a Justice on the Mississippi Supreme Court. He served as a judge until 1897.
Thomas Stockdale passed away in Summit, Mississippi, on January 8, 1899. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Summit. His former home has been saved by the Summit Historical Society. There is also a memorial to him on the grounds of his home.
