TCHO is a chocolate company. It is based in Berkeley, California, in the United States. TCHO works closely with farmers who grow cacao beans. They help farmers improve how they grow, ferment, and dry these beans.
TCHO's factory and main office are now in Berkeley. They used to be on Pier 17 in San Francisco. In February 2018, a Japanese candy company called Ezaki Glico bought TCHO.
The Story of TCHO
TCHO was started in December 2005. The founders were Timothy Childs and Karl Bittong. Timothy Childs was a technology expert. He even helped design vision systems for NASA's Space Shuttle program. Karl Bittong had worked in the chocolate industry for over 40 years.
In 2006, the company moved to Pier 17. This pier is very old, built in 1912. It was once used for shipping goods, including cacao beans. TCHO's chocolate factory was built using old German machines and newer equipment. In April 2014, TCHO moved its offices and factory to Berkeley, California.
TCHO also worked with a design company called Edenspiekermann. They helped create TCHO's unique packaging. This packaging has won many awards. These include the Academy of Chocolate Gold Award in 2009. It also won the European Design Gold Award in 2009.
TCHO's Delicious Products
TCHO makes several kinds of chocolate products. They create dark chocolate bars from single places. They also make plant-based chocolate bars. Other products include drinking chocolate and cocoa powder. They also sell roasted cacao nibs and baking chocolate.
TCHO mainly sells its products to stores in the United States. They also offer larger amounts for other chocolatiers and bakers.
TCHO Source Program
TCHO has a special program called "TCHO Source." Through this program, TCHO invests directly in cacao farmers. They work with farmers to share technology and knowledge. This is done in an "open source" way.
TCHO has set up "Flavor Labs" at farms around the world. These labs help farmers learn how to improve the taste of their cacao beans. This partnership helps farmers and makes better chocolate for everyone.
