The TIAA Bank Center is a very tall building, called a skyscraper, located in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. It stands 447 feet (136 meters) high. This makes it the third-tallest building in Jacksonville. It's also the biggest office building in the city, with over 956,201 square feet (88,834 square meters) of space for rent.

Over the years, this building has had several names. It was once known as the Southern Bell Telephone Building, then the AT&T Tower, and later the EverBank Center. In 2012, it became the EverBank Center when EverBank moved many of its employees there. Today, it is called the TIAA Bank Center. This name change happened around June 4, 2018, when EverBank changed its brand.

Building History: From Phone Company to Bank

The TIAA Bank Center was designed by a company called KBJ Architects. It first opened its doors in 1983. This large building takes up an entire city block in downtown Jacksonville. The Auchter Company built it.

One cool thing about the building is that every floor has 16 corner offices. This means lots of people get a great view! The building was built where an old hotel, the Hotel Mayflower, used to be.

Early Days: Southern Bell and AT&T

The tower was first built for the Southern Bell Telephone company. A year later, in 1984, a big change happened in the phone world. American Telephone & Telegraph (AT&T) had to split up its phone companies. Southern Bell then became part of a new company called BellSouth. Because of this, the signs on the building were changed to say BellSouth.

Years later, in 2006, AT&T bought BellSouth back. So, in 2008, the signs on the building were changed again, back to AT&T.

New Life as EverBank Center

In 2011, a company named CSX moved out of the tower. This left a lot of the building empty. Later that same year, the City of Jacksonville made a deal with EverBank. EverBank agreed to move over 1,200 employees into the building. They also promised to create 200 new jobs.

As part of the deal, EverBank took over nine floors of the building. They also got the right to name the tower. That's when it became the EverBank Center. Employees started moving in during the summer of 2012. The new EverBank signs were put up in September and October of that year.

Building Features

When you enter the TIAA Bank Center, you walk into a two-story open area called an atrium. On the second floor, there is a large auditorium that can seat 280 people. The building also has a special backup power system. This system can keep the whole building running if the main power goes out.

Right across the street from the building is a station for the JTA Skyway. This is a public transportation system that runs above the city streets. There is also a seven-level parking garage next to the building. It has space for 641 cars.

The building has changed owners a few times. In 2014, a company called Amkin Real Estate bought the building. Amkin Real Estate is a company based in Miami, Florida, that invests in properties.
