Thomas Jewett "TJ" Goree (born November 14, 1835 – died March 5, 1905) was an important soldier during the American Civil War. He fought for the Confederate States Army. He was a trusted helper, called an aide, to a famous general named James Longstreet. By the end of the war, TJ Goree had become a captain.
Life and Military Service
Thomas Jewett Goree was born in Alabama in 1835. When the American Civil War began in 1861, he joined the Confederate States Army. This war was a big conflict in the United States from 1861 to 1865. It was fought between the Northern states (the Union) and the Southern states (the Confederacy).
Goree served in the First Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. He became a captain and was one of General James Longstreet's most trusted aides. An aide is like a personal assistant who helps a high-ranking officer. Goree served throughout the entire war, which ended in 1865.
After the Civil War
After the war ended, TJ Goree continued to serve his community. He became a lawyer, helping people with legal matters. He also worked as a superintendent of penitentiaries. This means he was in charge of prisons.
In 1935, a special prison unit in Texas was named in his honor. It is called the Goree Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. This unit is recognized for meeting high standards by the American Correctional Association.
Goree in Movies
TJ Goree's story has even been told in movies! He was shown in the 1993 film Gettysburg. This movie was based on a book called The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. In the film, the actor Ivan Kane played the role of TJ Goree.
