TV+ (pronounced Te Ve Más or TV Más) is a TV channel in Chile. It broadcasts for free from Santiago. This channel was once known as UCV Televisión. It was the oldest TV station in Chile. It was also the only regional channel outside Santiago that reached the whole country.
TV+ started as an experiment in 1957 at the Pontifical University of Valparaíso. It officially launched in August 1959. In 2017, the channel moved its main offices to Viña del Mar. On November 21, 2018, the channel changed its name to "TV+". It also got a new look. Later that month, another channel, UCV 3, became UCV Televisión. It started broadcasting from the original studios in Viña del Mar.
In recent years, fewer people were watching the channel. So, in 2016, the university looked for a partner to help improve the network. On December 29, the university announced a big change. They sold most of the channel to a company called «TV+ SpA». The university still owns 10% of the channel. The rest is owned by Media 23 SpA.
How TV+ Started: Early Days
On October 5, 1957, the first regular TV broadcast in Chile happened. It was done by a group of experts from the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso. They showed the opening of a new building at the university. The President of Chile, Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, was there.
This event was special because it was a planned TV broadcast. The channel even showed a news report after the event. The TV station officially began on August 22, 1959. It was on VHF channel 8 in Valparaíso. Its first show was called El hombre ante el universo (The man in the face of the universe). It was a cultural program.
From 1957 to 1960, UCV TV broadcast from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Later, from 1968 to 1970, it broadcast for more hours. It was on air from 3:00 PM to midnight. In 1969, the channel changed its frequency to VHF channel 4 in Valparaíso.
Expanding Across Chile
In 1971, UCV TV built a special tower in La Serena. This allowed people in La Serena to watch UCV TV. It was the first city outside Valparaíso to get the channel. Three years later, in 1974, another tower was built in Santiago, the capital city.
In 1975, UCV bought portable video cameras. This made it easier to record things outside the studio. Most other TV stations at that time still used older film cameras. UCV TV was ahead of its time!
In 1978, UCV TV started broadcasting in color. This happened at the same time as Channel 13 in Santiago. UCV TV quickly adapted to these new changes. In that same year, it broadcast the first Teletón event. This was a big charity event. The channel was known as "Red UCV Televisión." It used channel numbers 4, 5, and 8. These numbers showed its frequencies in Valparaíso, Santiago, and La Serena. The channel in La Serena also showed programs from Santiago's Channel 13.
In 1990, a new channel connected to UCV started in Puerto Montt. It was first on channel 7. In 1998, it moved to channel 8 and became a relay station. Also in 1998, UCV changed its frequency to Channel 5. This was to make way for another new channel called La Red.
High-Definition TV
TV+ launched its own high-definition (HD) broadcast on June 25, 2010. Back then, it was still called UCV Televisión. The first HD show was a football match between Chile and Spain. This was during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The HD broadcast was available on digital TV. It was on virtual channel 29.1 in Valparaíso and 5.1 in Santiago. The picture quality was very clear.
