Taberville, Missouri facts for kids
Taberville is a small, quiet community in the state of Missouri, in the United States. It's not a big city, but rather an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a town or city. Taberville is located in the southwestern part of St. Clair County.
You can find Taberville about sixteen miles (or about 26 kilometers) west of a town called Osceola. It sits right on the north side of the Osage River, a river that flows through Missouri. Taberville used to have its own post office, but it closed down. Now, people who live there get their mail delivered from the nearby community of Rockville.
The History of Taberville
Have you ever wondered how places get their names? Taberville has an interesting story!
How Taberville Got Its Name
Originally, this community had a different name: Manoa. It was officially planned out, or "platted," under the name Manoa in the year 1859. This means that maps and property lines for the community were drawn up at that time.
Later, in 1866, a post office was opened in the area. This new post office was given the name Taberville. It stayed open and served the community for many years, finally closing its doors in 1968. The name "Taberville" comes from a person named Dr. Taber. He was the original owner of the land where the community was built. So, the community was named in his honor!
