The Story of Tahu Sumedang
How Tahu Bunkeng Began
Tahu Bunkeng is one of the oldest tofu shops in Sumedang. The story began in 1917. A Chinese immigrant named Ong Kino started making this special tofu.
Ong Kino came from a place called Anxi County in China. When he first arrived in Sumedang, he made tofu for his own family. But soon, he started selling it to his neighbors. People really liked his tofu, and his small business grew!
Passing Down the Business
In 1917, Ong Kino's only son, Ong Bunkeng, came to Sumedang. Ong Kino and his wife decided to go back to China. So, Ong Bunkeng took over the family business.
From the 1970s to the 1980s, the tofu business became even more popular. By 1992, it was very successful and still is today!
A Royal Taste Test
Once, a prince from Sumedang named Prince Soeriatmadja was traveling. He stopped by the "Tahu Bunkeng" shop to try the tofu. He loved it so much!
He said in the Sundanese language: "Geuning ngeunah ieu kadaharan teh, moal burung payu geura" This means something like, "This food tastes so delicious, many people will surely buy it!"
Where to Find Tahu Bunkeng
The main Tahu Bunkeng shop is in the center of Sumedang city. You can find it on Jalan 11 April No. 53, Tegalkalong. There are also other shops in the city.
