Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Taien calendar (also called Daien, Daiyan, or Dayan calendar) was a special way to keep track of time. It was a lunisolar calendar, which means it used both the Moon's phases and the Sun's position to figure out dates. This calendar system was first made in China. Later, it became very important in Japan, where people used it for over 100 years, from about 746 to 857.

History of the Taien Calendar

The Taien calendar system was created in China. It first started being used there during the Tang Dynasty, a powerful time in Chinese history. This was in the 17th year of an era called Kaigen.

Why a New Calendar Was Needed

Before the Taien calendar, Japan used other calendars like the Genka calendar and the Gihō calendar. These older calendars had some small mistakes. They might not have perfectly predicted the seasons or important dates. The Taien calendar was designed to fix these problems. It made timekeeping much more accurate.

Who Created the Taien Calendar?

A very smart Chinese astronomer named Yixing developed the Taien calendar. He was a monk and a scientist who studied the stars and planets. His work helped create a more precise calendar system for his time.

Understanding Lunisolar Calendars

A lunisolar calendar is different from the calendar we use today, which is mostly based on the Sun. Lunisolar calendars try to match both the Moon's cycles (which affect months) and the Sun's cycle (which affects years and seasons). This can be tricky! They often add an extra month every few years to keep everything lined up. This was important for farming and religious festivals in ancient times.
