The Taifa of Lorca (Arabic: طائفة لورقة) was a small, independent Muslim kingdom in what is now southern Spain. It existed during the Middle Ages. A "taifa" was a small kingdom that formed when a larger Muslim empire in Spain broke apart. Lorca was one of these independent states.

History of the Taifa of Lorca
The Taifa of Lorca first became independent in the year 1042. This happened when the city of Lorca separated from the larger emirate of Valencia. An "emirate" was another type of Muslim state, often ruled by an emir (a prince or commander).
First Period of Independence
The first ruler of this new kingdom was a leader named Ma'n Ibn Sumadih. His power reached beyond the city of Lorca. It included areas like Jaén and Baza. This first period of independence did not last very long.
Re-establishment of the Taifa
The Taifa of Lorca was re-established much later, in 1228. This happened after the fall of the Almoravid dynasty, which was a powerful Muslim empire. The new Taifa of Lorca was able to rule itself for about 22 years.
End of the Kingdom
Around the year 1250, the Taifa of Lorca was conquered. It was taken over by a neighboring kingdom, the taifa of Murcia. This ended Lorca's time as an independent taifa.
Rulers of Lorca
The rulers of the Taifa of Lorca were called emirs.
Ahlid Dynasty
- Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad: He ruled from 1228 until about 1250.
- The kingdom was then taken over by the Murcia kingdom around 1250.
