About Taiwo Owatemi
Early Life and Education
Taiwo Owatemi grew up in Plumstead, a town in England. She had strong family connections in Coventry, where her aunt and cousins lived. Her father passed away when she was six years old. Her mother, who was a nurse, raised Taiwo, her twin, and her older brother.
Taiwo studied at the University of Kent and earned a Master's degree. She then became a qualified pharmacist. Before she became an MP, she worked as a pharmacist. She helped patients at a cancer unit in the Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust.
In December 2023, Taiwo announced that she had welcomed her first child, a daughter.
Political Journey
Taiwo Owatemi started her political journey with an internship. This was part of a program by the Social Mobility Foundation. She gained experience working in the Westminster office of a Conservative MP, Oliver Letwin.
She also held several roles in the Young Fabians, a political group for young people. She wrote articles about health policy. From 2016, she was a governor at a local primary school.
In the 2019 general election, Taiwo was chosen as the Labour Party candidate for Coventry North West. The previous Labour MP, Geoffrey Robinson, decided to step down. Taiwo won the election, keeping the seat for Labour. She was one of three women elected as MPs from Coventry in 2019. The other two were Zarah Sultana and Colleen Fletcher.
Roles in Parliament
From April 2020 to September 2021, Taiwo Owatemi worked as a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS). She supported the Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Thomas-Symonds. A PPS helps a senior politician with their work.
In September 2021, she was appointed as the Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities. A 'Shadow Minister' is part of the opposition party. Their job is to challenge the government and suggest different policies. She resigned from this role in September 2022. She wanted to focus more on helping the people in her local area.
Taiwo Owatemi is also a member of Labour Friends of Israel. This group aims to strengthen ties between the Labour Party and Israel. She visited the country with a delegation in February 2023.
After the organization running Coventry's UK City of Culture projects faced financial problems, Taiwo spoke up. She raised the issue in the House of Commons. This is where MPs discuss important topics.
