Takumi Horiike (堀池 巧, Horiike Takumi, born 6 September 1965) is a former Japanese football player. He was a talented defender who played for several top clubs in Japan. He also proudly represented the Japan national team.

Takumi Horiike's Club Career
Early Football Days
Takumi Horiike started his football journey at Shimizu Higashi High School. He was a key player there. With his teammates, including Katsumi Oenoki and Kenta Hasegawa, he helped his school win the national high school championship. After high school, he continued to play football while studying at Juntendo University.
Playing for Yomiuri
In 1988, after finishing university, Horiike joined Yomiuri. This team was part of the Japan Soccer League, which was the top league in Japan at the time. He first played as a defensive midfielder. Later, he became a centre-back, working closely with Hisashi Kato.
Joining Shimizu S-Pulse
When Japan's first professional league, the J1 League, began, a new team called Shimizu S-Pulse was formed in his hometown. Horiike joined this club in 1992. It was a reunion for him, as he played again with his high school friends Oenoki and Hasegawa. At Shimizu S-Pulse, he played as a right full-back. After the first season of the J1 League, he was recognized as one of the best players. He was chosen for the "Best Eleven" team in 1993.
Later Career and Retirement
In 1998, Horiike moved to Cerezo Osaka on loan. He played there for a short time. He then returned to Shimizu S-Pulse briefly in 1999 before deciding to retire from playing professional football.
Takumi Horiike's National Team Career
Representing Japan
Takumi Horiike played for the Japan national team from 1986 to 1995. He played in 58 international matches and scored 2 goals. His first game for Japan was on August 1, 1986. This was a friendly match against Malaysia, and he was still a university student at the time. For the national team, he mostly played as a right full-back.
Asian Cup Victory
Horiike was an important part of the Japan team that won the 1992 Asian Cup. This was a big achievement for Japanese football. He played in 4 matches during that competition, helping his team become champions.
World Cup Qualifiers
Under the national coach Hans Ooft, Japan came very close to qualifying for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Horiike was on the field during the final qualifying match. Japan's dream of playing in the World Cup ended when Iraq scored a goal in the last moments of the game. Japanese fans remember this match as the "Agony of Doha".
Life After Playing
After retiring from playing, Takumi Horiike continued to be involved in football. He now works as a football commentator on television, sharing his knowledge and insights about the game.
