Katsumi Oenoki (大榎 克己, Ōenoki Katsumi) is a famous Japanese football player. He was born on April 3, 1965. Katsumi Oenoki played as a Midfielder for many years. He also played for the Japanese national team. After his playing career, he became a football coach and manager.

Katsumi Oenoki's Playing Career

Early Football Days

Katsumi Oenoki started his football journey in high school. He went to Shimizu Higashi High School. There, he played with future teammates Kenta Hasegawa and Takumi Horiike. Together, they won the national high school championship. After high school, he continued playing football at Waseda University.

Playing for Clubs

In 1988, after finishing university, Oenoki joined a team called Yamaha Motors. This team is now known as Júbilo Iwata. He played there for a few years.

When Japan started its first professional football league, the J1 League, a new team was formed in his hometown. This team was Shimizu S-Pulse. Katsumi Oenoki joined Shimizu S-Pulse in 1992. He reunited with his high school friends, Hasegawa and Horiike, there.

Winning Trophies

Oenoki helped Shimizu S-Pulse win some big titles. They won the 1996 J.League Cup. They also won the second stage of the 1999 J1 League. Another great win was the 1999–2000 Asian Cup Winners' Cup. He played over 250 league games for Shimizu S-Pulse. He retired from playing football after the 2002 season.

Playing for Japan

Katsumi Oenoki also played for the Japanese national team. He played 5 games for his country between 1989 and 1990. His first game for Japan was on May 5, 1989. It was a friendly match against Korea in Seoul. He also played in the qualifying games for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

Katsumi Oenoki's Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Oenoki became a coach. In 2003, he worked as a coach at Shimizu S-Pulse. From 2004 to 2007, he was the manager for Waseda University's football team. Under his leadership, the university team improved a lot. They moved up from lower leagues to the Kanto League Div 1. In 2006, his team finished second in the national university championship.

In 2007, he earned a special coaching license. This license is needed to manage a J.League club. In 2008, he went back to Shimizu S-Pulse. He became the manager for their youth team. In July 2014, he became the manager for the main Shimizu S-Pulse team. However, he resigned in July 2015.
