Talara is a city located in the Piura Region of northwestern Peru. It is a port city right on the Pacific Ocean. In 2017, about 91,444 people lived there. Talara has a hot and dry climate.

This city is very important because it has a lot of oil. During World War II, the United States used Talara as an air base. It was also a key place for ships to refuel. Today, Talara is still home to a large fishing fleet. The city has its own airport, called Cap. FAP Víctor Montes Arias Airport.

Talara is the westernmost city on the mainland of South America. A very small town nearby, Seccion Dieciocho, is slightly further west. The land itself reaches its westernmost point at Punta Pariñas. Talara and some nearby cities, like Piura and Amotape, were part of the story in the short novel Who Killed Palomino Molero? by Mario Vargas Llosa.
