A Look Back at Talladega Springs' Past

Talladega Springs was once known as Sulphur Springs. It got its current name in 1845. The town officially became a town in 1913.

A Popular Resort Town

Long ago, Talladega Springs was a popular place for people to visit. They came to drink the water from the springs. This water had a lot of sulfur and people believed it could help them feel better.

The town had many things for visitors. There was a big hotel with a swimming pool. It also had a bank, a pharmacy, and a post office. There was even a small town jail with two cells.

Local Businesses and Travel

Talladega Springs also had a grist mill, which grinds grain. There was a sawmill for cutting wood. Interestingly, it even had a Coca-Cola bottling plant! Trains would bring travelers to the town several times a day.

What Remains Today

In the early 1900s, fewer people came to visit. The town became much smaller. Today, you can still see some old parts of Talladega Springs. You might find the foundations of the old hotel. There's also a cracked cement pool and the walls of the hotel's smokehouse. The old jail is still there too.

Fort Williams' Location

Near Talladega Springs, there was once a place called Fort Williams. This fort was used during the Creek War. It was a place where Native Americans could get help and supplies. Later, this area was covered by water when Lay Lake was built.
