Tallheo is a special place in British Columbia, Canada. It used to be a village for the Nuxalk people, who called it Talyu. It was also once a busy town with a fish processing factory called a cannery. Tallheo is located near Bella Coola, British Columbia on a part of the ocean called North Bentinck Arm.

Tallheo is also the name of a special way the Nuxalk language is spoken. This dialect was used by the Talhyumc, a group of Nuxalk people who lived there.

A Look Back at Tallheo

Tallheo has a rich history, especially with its fish cannery. In 1905, a man from Norway started the Tallheo Cannery. He was part of a group of Norwegian immigrants who settled nearby in a place called Hagensborg.

The Tallheo Cannery

The cannery was a big workplace. It hired people from the Talhyumc Nuxalk community. It also hired many Norwegian-Canadian people and others from the area. The factory specialized in processing different types of salmon. These included sockeye, coho, pink, chum, and spring salmon. The Canadian Fishing Company, based in Vancouver, owned the cannery.

Tallheo Today

Tallheo was once a very busy and lively community. Today, the old Tallheo Cannery has been changed. It now operates as a bed and breakfast. This means people can stay there overnight and enjoy breakfast.

Don't Get Confused!

It is important not to mix up Tallheo with Tallheo Hot Springs. The hot springs are a different place. They are located on the west side of South Bentinck Arm.
