Tamanna Bhatia was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra on December 21, 1989. Her parents are Santosh and Rajni Bhatia. She has an older brother named Anand. Her father works as a diamond merchant.

When she was 13, Tamannaah started acting in plays. She was part of the famous Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai for a year. After getting some experience, she changed her screen name slightly to Tamannaah. She did this for numerological reasons, which is a belief about how numbers and names can affect a person's life.

In 2005, Tamannaah first appeared in a music video called "Lafzo Mein." Soon after, she made her movie debut in the Hindi film Chand Sa Roshan Chehra. This movie didn't do very well. That same year, she started acting in Telugu films with Sree. In 2006, she made her first Tamil film appearance in Kedi.

In 2007, her movies Happy Days and Kalloori became very successful. Her roles as a college student in these films were loved by audiences. This helped her become a leading actress in both Telugu and Tamil cinema.

She continued to act in many films. Some of her successful movies during this time include Ayan (2009), Paiyaa (2010), and 100% Love (2011). She also appeared in a special dance song called "Labbar Bomma" in the film Alludu Seenu (2014).
