Tamara Wenda Ashford (born December 19, 1968) is an important judge who works at the United States Tax Court. This court helps people and the government solve disagreements about taxes. Tamara Ashford's Early Life and Education
Tamara Ashford was born on December 19, 1968. She studied at several universities to become a lawyer. She earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, from Duke University. Later, she got her law degree, called a Juris Doctor, from Vanderbilt University Law School. She also earned another advanced law degree, a Master of Laws, from the University of Miami School of Law.
Tamara Ashford's Career Journey
After finishing her studies, Tamara Ashford started her legal career. She worked as a law clerk for a judge named John C. Martin. This job meant she helped the judge with his legal research and writing.
From 1997 to 2001, she worked for the United States Department of Justice. She was part of the Tax Division, which deals with tax laws. Later, she worked at a law firm called Miller & Chevalier in Washington, D.C.
She also served as an Assistant to the Commissioner of Internal Revenue. This role involved helping the head of the IRS, which is the U.S. government's tax collection agency. Before becoming a judge, she was the Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Tax Division. This was a senior role where she helped manage legal cases about taxes.
Becoming a Judge at the U.S. Tax Court
On September 18, 2013, President Barack Obama chose Tamara Ashford to be a judge. She was nominated to serve on the United States Tax Court for 15 years. This court is where people can challenge decisions made by the IRS.
When she spoke to the Senate Finance Committee, she said she had the right skills to be a fair judge. She promised to resolve tax disagreements "fairly, impartially and quickly." The United States Senate approved her nomination on November 20, 2014. She officially started her job as a judge on December 19, 2014.
