Tamboril is a lively town in the Dominican Republic. It is located in the Santiago province, which is in the northern part of the country. This town sits at the bottom of the Cordillera Septentrional mountains, about 230 meters (755 feet) above sea level. Tamboril covers an area of about 71.4 square kilometers (27.6 square miles). It shares borders with the Puerto Plata Province to the north, Licey to the south, Espaillat Province to the east, and the city of Santiago to the west.

A Look Back in Time

Tamboril became a municipality in 1900. A municipality is like a local government area. When it was first created, it was called Peña. This name stayed until 1962, when it was officially changed to Tamboril.

The municipality of Tamboril includes a special area called the municipal district of Canca La Piedra. It also has six rural sections and 36 smaller places, which are called parajes.

Tamboril: The Cigar Capital

Many people know Tamboril as the "World Capital of Cigars." This is because it has more cigar factories and skilled cigar makers than almost anywhere else. The Dominican Republic is the world's largest producer of cigars. About 44% of the cigars sold around the world come from this country.

Most of these cigars are made in the fertile lands of the Cibao region, where 90% of the factories are located. For many years, this area has been the biggest supplier of cigars to the United States. Cigars are now the third largest export product for the Dominican Republic. Only gold and medical instruments bring in more money for the country.

Tamboril is home to famous cigar companies. These include La Aurora, La Flor Dominicana, Tabacalera Palma, and PDR Cigars. These companies make some of the highest-rated cigars in the world.

Farming and Factories

Tamboril is also a major farming area in its province. Farmers here grow important crops like plantains, cassava, and sweet potato. These crops are then sold in the markets of Santiago. Besides farming, Tamboril also has factories that make cigarettes and chocolates.

Community Services

Because Tamboril is close to Santiago, many people go to Santiago for health care and education. However, Tamboril still has its own important services. It has a health clinic and two smaller rural clinics. There is also a state school and two libraries for the community.
