The Tanakia lanceolata is a type of fish that lives in freshwater. It prefers areas with a mild climate, known as the temperate zone. This fish belongs to a large group called the Cyprinidae family, which includes many kinds of carp and minnows. It is also part of a smaller group within that family, called the Acheilognathinae.
This fish is originally from waterways in China, Japan, and the Korean peninsula. Scientists first described it in 1846. They called it Capoeta lanceolata. Over time, it has also been known by other scientific names like Acheilognathus lanceolata and Acheilognathus lanceolatus.
In Korea, people call this fish 납자루 (napjaru). This name means "slender bitterling." In Japan, it is known as ヤリタナゴ (yaritanago).
