The main office for Tanganda Tea is in Mutare. This city is located in the beautiful Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. Most of the company's tea is grown around a town called Chipinge. However, Tanganda also buys a lot of tea from smaller, independent farmers.
How Did Tanganda Tea Start?
The story of tea in Zimbabwe began in 1924. A woman named Mrs. Florence Phillips brought some tea seeds from India. She was the wife of a tea-planter from Assam, a famous tea-growing region. She carefully smuggled these seeds out of India.
Mrs. Phillips planted the seeds near Chipinge. The tea plants grew very well! This success led to the creation of a company. It was called Ward and Phillips (Pty) Ltd. This company owned two tea farms: New Year's Gift and Ratelshoek Estates. These farms became the very beginning of the Tanganda Tea company we know today.
