Tanganda Tea facts for kids

Tanganda Tea is a very important company in Zimbabwe. It is the largest grower and maker of tea and coffee in the country. It is also one of the biggest tea producers in all of Africa.

Tanganda Tea is part of a larger group called the Meikles Group. This group is a big Zimbabwean company. Besides Tanganda Tea, the Meikles Group also owns hotels and department stores in southern Africa.

Where Tanganda Tea is Located

Tanganda Tea's main base is in Mutare. This city is in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. This area is known for its beautiful mountains and good farming land.

The History of Tea in Zimbabwe

Tea growing in Zimbabwe started a long time ago. In 1924, a woman named Mrs. Florence Phillips brought some tea seeds from India. She was a tea planter's wife from a place called Assam. She carefully brought these seeds to Zimbabwe.

The first tea bushes were planted near a town called Chipinge. The tea grew very well there. Because of this success, a company was formed. It was called Ward and Phillips (Pty) Ltd. This company owned two tea farms, New Year's Gift and Ratelshoek Estates. These farms were also near Chipinge. This early company was the beginning of what we now know as Tanganda Tea.

How Tanganda Tea Grows and Sells Tea

Most of Tanganda Tea's own tea is still grown around Chipinge. This area has the perfect climate for tea plants. The company also buys a lot of tea from smaller, independent farmers. This helps support many local growers.

Tanganda Tea sells its famous brand of tea in Zimbabwe. You can also find their tea in many other countries across central Africa.
