Tanggula railway station facts for kids
The Tanggula (also called Dangla) railway station is a very special train station in China. It is located in Amdo County, Tibet Autonomous Region, close to the border with Qinghai Province. What makes Tanggula Station so unique is that it is the highest railway station in the world!
This station has three train tracks. One of these tracks has a platform where people would normally get on or off a train. Another track has a very short platform.
About the World's Highest Station
This amazing station is part of the Qingzang railway line. It first opened for trains on July 1, 2006. The Tanggula Station is located an incredible 5,068 meters (about 16,627 feet) above sea level. This makes it higher than any other train station on Earth!
To give you an idea, it is even higher than Cóndor station in Bolivia (4,786 meters) and Galera Station in Peru (4,781 meters). The station is also very close to the highest point of the railway tracks themselves, which is 5,072 meters high.
Station Features
The Tanggula Station is quite long, stretching about 1.25 kilometers (0.78 miles). It was designed with a special purpose in mind. The people who built it chose this exact spot so that passengers could enjoy the amazing views from the platform.
Why Trains Stop Here
Even though it's a station, Tanggula is not like most others. It is an "unstaffed" station, meaning there are no workers there. Also, the area around it is not inhabited, so no one lives nearby.
Because of this, no regular passenger trains stop here for people to get on or off. However, a train might stop at Tanggula Station for a short time. This usually happens when it needs to wait for another train coming from the opposite direction to pass by. If your train stops here, passengers must stay inside the train.
